Gotta spend a few words on a our travel companions in Turkmenistan (the only way to travel the country is with an organized tour with a guide)...
First of all, we have to mention Andrew, an Australian-Egyptian guy who has been travelling around the world for many months now, always with a take-it-easy & take-your-time (mainly) attitude that we loved.
Unfortunately, in the short period we spent together he has been involved in a series of issues with visas & related.... We hope everything gets sorted out soon!
Finally, Andrew is also a philosophical guru (Giulia is the first adept), spreading the "same same, but different" philosophy around the world.
Then we had Paul, a very nice British fellow who was riding is motorbike through Europe, Russia, Central Asia and then back to Europe.
We shared only a few days with him, but we'll look forward to hear about his return home.
Last but not least, there was our guide. For some reason, Lorenzo was initially expecting a sort of Miss Turkmenistan to be our guide. Instead, we got Mr Merdan.
Nonetheless he was a really great guy, about to move to Switzerland, and who spoke about Turkmen history with a very passionate tone ("can you imagine?")
PS - Andrew, as soon as you read this post, please let us know if you are in jail or still roaming free!
PPS - Andrew, did you speak with Antonina?

Hello,
I am so happy to finally hear from both of you. You must be wondering why. I am new here. I came across your blog about 1 week ago when I'm surfing for infos about Iran, and since then I have been checking yr blog everyday patiently (as you said you have been quiet for a while). I am on the early stage of making my preparations, so I am still lack of info about Iran.
I plan to visit Iran in November. Since you are in Iran now, I hope you don't mind sharing some infos with me (especially regarding budget, since I'm on a shoe string budget, so I need to really plan my budgeting). What I would like to know is :
1. How much is the price for cheap food which I can buy from street stalls, such as kebab + rice, kebab + bread, buns, pizza, ice cream, yogurt, plain bread, fruit juice etc ? How much must I allocate for budget meals (BF, L, D) per day ? FYI I'm not a heavy eater and not fussy either.
2. I tried to check on the latest entrance fees to visit the major attractions in Iran, but I couldn't find it. I hope you don't mind telling me, or write in your blog about the entrance fees to visit the museums, palaces, mosques, and other places you visited.
3. Also, plz update me and other readers of your mode of transportation in Iran, the price etc & accomodations.
4. Are you going to travel by train in Iran ? Do you know if there is any way for me to book my train ticket in Iran online from my own country ? Or I can only buy the tickets once I have arrived in Iran ? If I can ask the hostel people to book the tickets for me, can I trust the Iranians as to send the money to them ? Frankly speaking, the idea of getting the tickets only when I'm in Iran is not my type of travelling cos I prefer to make all the arrangements beforehand. Besides, I only have about 10 days to cover Iran and I want to see as much as I can.
5. I understand that Turkey was not in your route. However, if you happen to come across the latest bus or train fare Tehran - Istanbul, do inform me.
FYI, I am from Malaysia. Will be going to Iran with my 14 year old son. I want to visit Tehran, Esfahan, Shiraz, Yadz, and if time permits, Maashad as well. Then, I will go to Istanbul (from Tehran). I have been backpacking to quite a number of countries. Pretty tough person, so a lil bit of uncomfortableness is not an isuue, and I am very used to rush from one place to another :)
Finally....I like the title of your post. "Same Same But Different". I have a tee with that quote which I bought from Laos last year.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Hey...
Just a quick one to let you know we'll answer your question.... got your queries right now only. With some patience you'll get them :-)
Thanks Lorenzo. I will be waiting.
Anita
Hi Anita,
just be patient and when we come back we'll write you details emails about prices and trasportations in a much more precise and concise way than in this blog. In practise we can arganise you almost the entire trip;-) A part from kidding, prices are very cheap in general, but it doesn t seem possible to reverse in advance trains or buses, anyway many guesthouses can assist with that!
Talk to you later, Giulia and Lorenzo
